COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAM

CMA offers an after-school computer program for middle school students. The class is taught in person once a week by a Wheaton College professor assisted by a middle school math teacher who receives supplemental 1 on 1 teacher training. The program teaches participating scholars how to use Python Jupyter Notebooks for (i) data analysis such as population changes in major cities during the Great Migrations and the impact of COVID-19 by zip code using data from the Chicago Data Portal;  (ii) exploring math concepts such as using random numbers to approximate the value of pi or the role of pixels in image resolution; and STEAM activities such as creating simple musical tunes like “We Shall Overcome” based on pitch frequencies and word clouds based on song lyrics or speeches such as “I Have a Dream”. Scholars who complete the program are given a certificate of achievement and a $100 stipend. The scholars have the opportunity to demonstrate the use of Jupyter Notebooks to family and friends attending the final achievement ceremony. CMA Math & Computer Science program is part of the organization’s Violent Prevention initiative.
